The Laws of Life Essay Program is a character-education essay contest that invites students to reflect on their values. The goal is that these values will lead students to live meaningful, productive lives. To enter, students must write essays that reflect the values they want to follow in life. The Laws of Life Essay Program helps students understand the importance of living by a set of personal values and teaches them how to act with those values in mind. Students in the middle school division write essays about the values they want to follow in life. A student in the high school division writes their writings about the deals they have followed in their own life story so far and how those values led them to be where they are today.
The program has five divisions;
- Division I-Students in elementary division-grades 5-8, e.g., Pelican Marsh Elementary School;
- Division II-Students in grades 9-12; Division III-Students in grades 9-12 with a learning disability or severe physical handicap;
- Division IV-Students in grades 9-12 who are homeschooled and
- Division V-Students in grades 9-12 are homeschooled with a learning disability or severe physical handicap.

The Law of Life is a concept that Farley Mowat introduced in his book People of the Deer back in 1952. It means a universal system that best guides behavior toward the reproductive success and survival of some particular gene pool. In other words, any of which best fosters life.
